A nice update, but some potential issues are spoiling the good thing. As an addition to the 2018 release of the video editing suite, Adobe has added a new color picker to the application. This update brings the new CS6-style color picker to Premiere Pro and makes it easier for editors to access and color-correct videos. If you’re using Premiere on a Mac, it’s easy to access by going to Tools | Color selection, although there is a bit of a learning curve here.
What is New in Premiere Pro 2022
The new color picker is designed to work directly in the application, as opposed to the old menu that was accessed with a keyboard shortcut. The new one will pop up and work quickly, allowing you to choose color while you’re editing. Adobe has taken advantage of the additional space between the timeline and the frame display and given the color picker plenty of room, including allowing you to quickly change to the new color palette. There’s also some extra information here, including a timer and a log of how much time you’ve spent color correcting.
That’s pretty great, but the release also brings some apparent inconsistencies with the timeline. Premiere Pro 2022 sees some features and updates that aren’t yet widely available to everyone using the current version of the software. Many users won’t have access to some of the automatic scene organizing tools that Premiere Pro has had for years, including changing a bunch of values for video editing. You’ll still be able to adjust some video settings manually, but Premiere Pro 2022 is clearly designed to allow users to be more involved with the edit.
Photoshop CS6 Color Filters
To expand upon what Adobe is saying, certain editing tools are currently more fully available in Photoshop than they are in Premiere Pro. The adjustments are a bit complex and it’s a bit more work to change some of the colors in Premiere, but there are some significant additions to what Photoshop can do, too. Similar to the tools that Premiere Pro had added in recent years, you can use Photoshop to create a new color scheme and have that play with the colors for you, but you’ll also have access to a bunch of older Photoshop color filters.
It’s not immediately clear to me that this is a big problem or issue, but it does come with some concerns. As we’ve seen, Photoshop has taken in a number of features from Premiere, including the ability to apply a color filter from Photoshop to Premiere. This creates some conflicts, which are mostly because it’s harder to tell Photoshop apart from the Premiere versions of the same color filters. It might seem silly to worry about a bit of difference between a few settings, but there are issues that come up because Photoshop doesn’t use the exact same editing tools as Premiere Pro.
There are other challenges as well. Adobe Premiere Pro 2022 is taking in many of the features that Photoshop has added over the years. So there’s a bit of a learning curve with Photoshop CS6 color filters that Premiere Pro simply doesn’t have. It’s not always easy to get them to integrate, for example, and you may not be able to match the right tone with the wrong settings. This may have some impact on those who are looking for professional color work, for which Premiere Pro is a better tool.
We’ve seen Adobe bring Photoshop features into Premiere Pro for years, and there’s no reason to think that they won’t continue to do so. With Adobe creating more features and features that they’re taking in from Photoshop, it’s just important to recognize that Premiere Pro is in an awkward position with some overlapping functionality.

Adobe Premiere Pro Features
Adobe Premiere Pro 2022 is a free upgrade for existing users. However, Adobe has updated the existing Premiere Pro to version 2018.5.3, and that will also come with the new features. The update is relatively small and users may need to launch Premiere Pro and hit the update button to get it.
