With a public beta release now available to the masses (hopefully), we wanted to find out how easy it is to update the operating system on our own Windows 11 PC, which has yet to be upgraded to Windows 11 Creators Update. In researching our findings, we noticed Microsoft publish a blog post about Windows updates and the software installer, and the steps you need to take to install Windows free download. Below, we’ve extracted the critical bits of information.

Windows 11 free download guide
If you’re already running Windows 11 Creators Update, you’ll need to download an ISO file, which is a complete version of Windows you can install on your computer (previously you were only able to download a subset of Windows). You’ll also need the option to be upgraded through Windows Update, and a network connection. Before you begin, back up your important files and make sure you’re on the latest version of Windows, version 1511 which hasn’t been released as of writing.
It is worth noting that while Microsoft does provide a quick & easy install guide, you don’t have to follow any steps. The free download will prepare your computer and install Windows automatically. Just remember that it may take a bit of time to download the necessary ISO file from Microsoft. Also, after the ISO file has been downloaded. You’ll need to extract the downloaded file and double-check everything that’s in the ISO file is correct. Make sure that the “pcinfo.txt” file is in the original directory as indicated in the image below.

Windows 11 PC Update
To do this we’ll need to perform two software updates, namely the November update, and the December update. When Microsoft releases a free Windows software update, they will also provide updates that will offer a single-click install option and upgrade to the new operating system.
- The December update will be the only update that will be available at the same time as the Windows free download and will come complete with Microsoft Edge, Windows Photos, and DirectX.

Windows 11 for Mobile
The Windows 11 free download does not currently exist for mobile platforms. As we mentioned previously, with the Windows update for Windows 11 Mobile, Microsoft will offer a single-click upgrade experience and has removed the need to manually download the ISO file. The company will also be offering a similar set-up of mobile devices.
